The Evolution Of Men

I was sitting and thinking recently about when I was in the work force in the 90s, many of the older men in a world of construction were supportive of women.  The men that were supportive were the ones with daughters who were struggling to find their way in the world.  The men that drove me crazy either had boys or no children at all.  They were less than supportive and their idea of helping a gal was buying her dinner and possibly schooling her in bed.  I was lucky to have a Christian boss that believe us gals could do anything the guys could with proper education and determination.  He didn’t tolerate harassment and it was immediate dismissal.

Then there were the middle aged men who were still finding their own way in the world.  They had families to support and most had wives at home or working part time jobs.  Many of these women were educated but never used their degree.  I grew up with some of these men’s children and it was difficult for me to see them at the same level as myself, but I learned from them.  I learned that the world was changing and they were struggling to keep up with women in the work force.  Women, in their eyes were taking many of the sustained living jobs that men had previously held.  One man once told me that change was coming to the world and that the man’s place as provider was being eliminated.

Fast forward 25 years, most of those men have passed or retired.  Many who helped teach me and shape my perspective on business.  Men who KNEW that women have choices.  I’m not talking pro life choices, I’m talking pro family or pro work force choices.  My boss was fully supportive when I decided to give up a 60 hour a week job to care for my family.  After my 6 weeks of maternity leave, I looked into my tiny daughter’s face and I couldn’t leave her at a day care.

With the #MeToo movement going full speed ahead there are stories of sexual abuse, abuse of power, and the new one dangling the carrot of what you want in front of you with the idea you’ll get the prize.  Men are trying to control how far, how well, and how much we will be because they don’t know how to work with us instead of against, and for us.  Work against us because they want to keep their stature and position.  For us because they want the cute little wife, with a perfect house, and children.  They also want to keep their virility, their youth, and their ego.

As women, I think we can help men evolve, we need to teach them that what was accepted 25 years ago and longer wasn’t right and how to move forward.  We need to teach men how to treat us.  Not every many has grown up knowing that we are the stronger sex and why.  They are jealous of all of the choices we have and make.  Where do we start?  With our own sons!

The Treasured Golden Jewelry Box

As a child of about 4, I have fond memories of sitting on my parents bed and watching my mom get ready for a night out.  Back then this small town had things to do, like dinner and dancing, and my parents always had other couples to double date with.  I marveled at all of my mom’s adventures and pretty things; dresses, shoes, make up, and jewelry.  None of the items were expensive but it was a treasure trove for a child to look at, feel, and catch the scent of her mother’s perfume.

My mother had a large golden jewelry box that hypnotized me.  On the occasions she took it out of its drawer, she would let me sit and go through the jewelry stashed inside.  It was such a treat because the items she kept in usually had meaning to her.  I remember rubbing my tiny fingers along the top of the box, awed by it’s beauty on the outside.  Inside, I would find an array of colorful beads, colored class gems, rings, necklaces and earrings.  I would sit and chatter at her while she applied her make up.  Rubbing my fingers along the surface of the colorful jewels and feeling the different cuts mesmerized me.  I believed my mother was a real princess.

Putting bits and pieces of information together over the years from my Gran and my Mom, I came to the conclusion that in her younger years my mother spent a good portion of her paychecks acquiring costume jewelry from the 60’s.  Much of which I treasure and wear today.

To this day I will call my mom and say remember your gold jewelry box?  And I will tell her a memory of me playing with it.  For my Birthday a couple of weeks ago my mother gave me the golden jewelry box.  This box that I love because it reminds of a happy moment in time.   It’s been sitting on my buffet since my Birthday begging me write this post.  Today I decided to start filling it with jewels of paste and it has brought me loving memories of my Gran, Grandmother and Mom.   When my Grandmother and Gran passed I received a lot of their costume jewelry that was from the the 1940’s and up.  And so today I’m filling the Golden Jewelry Box with treasures from the three women I’ve loved and looked up to most in my life.

Do you have an heirloom attached to your childhood memories?

What I See vs What She Sees

What I think Dot is thinking, “I wish someone else had adopted me.  I don’t like you mom.”

What Dot is probably REALLY thinking, “I’m tired and need a nap.  I love you mom.”

What we think of ourselves tricks us into untruths we think are about us, because we don’t like our own self.  This is creating a whole new way of thinking for me.  When I think something negative, I have been consciously stopping and thinking it through.  Is this what they are thinking or is this how I perceive myself?  It can cause a hamster wheel in your head that never ends but if you throw the wheel out, and instead of thinking with emotion, think with intelligence and then emotion you may start to feel better about you!

Beware of Dog but Be Afraid of the Cats!

The dishwasher repairman was here the other day and I introduced him to Dot, my 6 month old Beabull.  She’s a doll, curious, but a doll just the same.  She was sweet and lost interest quickly.  The repairman went to work with half his body in the dishwasher.  Not long after I hear a muffled yell, “Holy CATS!”

I had forgotten to introduce him to our 4 cats.  Mainly, because they come out when they please and I hadn’t really seen a need.  I jumped up and looked to find 3 of the 4 cats on his back.  I couldn’t help but laugh.  Lucky, for him they’re friendly but inquisitive little creatures.  They really wanted to know what he was doing and even raised their voices.

I shooed the cats off of him, most especially, Vanilla, our special cat who is a solid 20lbs by himself.  When the guy was done he looked at the cats and gave each one a pat, and admitted to me what when Vanilla hopped on him that he thought, it must be the puppy.

Our dog doesn’t bark much and she never alerts us when someone is at the door.  The cats however, are another story.  They all run for the door, and one even meows heading to the door, however they hadn’t that day.  Let me take a moment to introduce you.

Dot – 3/4 English Bulldog & 1/4 Beagle

Dot is sweet and friendly, but her downfall is chasing cats.  She was schooled by Oli, our mama cat and no longer chases her.  The others, however, are at her mercy.  The funny thing is when she catches one she hugs them.  They hat her hugs and kisses but at least she isn’t trying to eat them!

Oli – aka mama kitty – Maine Coon

This kitty is one to love.  She’s had a hard life as a feral & indoor cat.  She came to us as a kitten.  Her and her brother starving and living in our woodpile outside.  Catching them was hard but we brought them in and gave them ample food and water.  They weren’t happy inside though and so after some tlc we put them in our barn.   Oli’s brother disappeared and after a vacation we came home to kittens!

Raising Oli’s kittens was amazing and I’ll share more stories later but we kept 2.

Izzy – Calico

Izzy, is one of Oli’s kittens, she’s your basic calico, but she thinks she’s a nurse.  When someone is sick in the house they know Izzy will be laying by their side.  She will also get up and touch her nose to your forehead from time to time.  We’re convinced she’s checking temperatures.  She is my cat though.  When she’s not playing nurse she’s in our room napping and waiting for us to come to bed.  She sleeps between my husband and I and if we’re holding hand’s she’ll slip her little paw between us.

Vanilla – Tan Tabby

Vanilla, oh where do I start.  He was found much later than the other kittens and Oli had been taking amazing care of him, but he had pine pitch stuck to his nose and when we soaked it off green ooze was coming from his nose.  He was also a 1/4 of the size of the other kittens.  The vet gave him antibiotics but said the outlook wasn’t good.  We he pulled through and became Quinn’s special kitty.  He’s not smart, doesn’t know his name (though I wouldn’t come to Vanilla either), but he can use the litter box and eat.  Obviously, at 20lbs he eats a lot.  Try putting one cat on a diet when you have 4.   Vanilla lives in Quinn’s room with him and sometimes has to be thrown out for trying to sleep on Quinn’s chest at night.

Jasper – Tuxedo

Jasper found himself a home.  Ian lost his long time best friend and cat Poppy, and a year later wanted another cat.  While we had 3 now I didn’t have the heart to tell him no.  I was impressed that the then teen went to all of the county shelters with in a 100 mile radius.  He didn’t want just any cat, he wanted a cat that wanted him, and Jasper proved to be that cat by hitting him on the head from the cage.  When Ian would bend down to look at other cats Jasper but knock him on the noggin.  When he took him out of the cage to bring him home and the other cats came around Jasper let them know Ian was his.  Since then Jasper has attached himself to Ian and lives in his room.

LaKota Herbs sent me the following products for review:

  • Soulagement Nocturne LaKota PM Night Time Pain Relief
  • Extra Strength Extra Fort
